What should a stack pack/sail pack/ lazy bag cost?

I have a 63' mast and 21' boom....currently the mainsail has a labor intensive cover that is no fun to put on if the winds up. Any ideas what a bag system should cost? Is it possible to diy?

What do you expect the project will cost? How much time invested? What's your skill level on a sewing machine?

Re: What should a stack pack/sail pack/ lazy bag cost?

At a recent boat show, a local sailmaker told me a stackpack (equivalent) goes for around $100/ft complete.
It was a year ago and I don't remember which sailmaker.
I'm going to look into SailRite when I'm ready to do it.

The stack-pack is one of the best things I have spent money on and in the US $2,000 sounds about right. I just paid $1,500 for one in NZ.

I have a FP Lipari. Replaced mine last year in Annapolis for $1,100 installed. Very happy with the work.

Re: What should a stack pack/sail pack/ lazy bag cost?

Last year I paid £550 in the UK (4.8mtr boom). It didn't include the lazy-jacks though, which I made myself, just the fixing pints on the stack pack.

Sailrite has free complete instruction on how to make your own, and they sell kits.

If you are not confident in doing it yourself you may be able to buy one from one of the sailor resale stores like Bacon Sales in Annapolis MD or Sailor Exchange in St Augustine FL. i bought one from Bacon. It was $800 for about the same size you are looking for but I had to have some repairs done shortly after I bought it. It works but is not as heavy duty as I would like.

I replace the lazy jacks myself. This was pretty easy. The hardest part was getting the lines in the mast.

Around £100 per metre here in UK, may or may not include lazy jacks, depends on whether you are near the boat show times (January and September) when you can get deals, also if the sailmaker is busy or not.

I had never done any sewing until last Summer. I made covers for outboard, BBQ, some hatches (to protect Varnish and a Cabin top cover ( again varnish) and side curtains for dodger.
My machine is an old 1950's home machine all metal.
For the stack pack I Purchased 12 yds 60" width sunbrella $ 16.50 a yd.
# 10 coil zipper chain and pulls. 10 yds .90 yd.
Some of the material will be used on a couple of smaller projects.
So far all I have done is cut out the sunbrella with a sailrite hot knife.

Re: What should a stack pack/sail pack/ lazy bag cost?

We're 80' something by 22' and use a stack pack, the first one we bought, the second one we made. It's an easy project and makes handling a big sail manageable. If you have a continuous zipper line and let the main halyard live on the headboard setting or striking the main only takes a couple minutes. You may also want to consider adding boom wings or hay racks to widen the base. We're 36" tip to tip across the boom wings, this prevents a heavy mainsail from falling over the side of the boom, it's as big a help as the stack pack and lazy cradles.

Re: What should a stack pack/sail pack/ lazy bag cost?

I have sewed very little in my life although I know the basics. I scored a walking foot Juki machine LU-1508 (very heavy duty industrial type) for free last year and practiced a bit over the winter.

My first big project was a sail cover and I went with a Sailrite kit. For my 15' boom it was about $240 for the materials and they include everything, even the UV thread although I already had that.

The kit comes plotted out on the Sunbrella you choose, I went with Toast.

I bought an electric hot knife which I highly recommend as cutting with scissors can allow the fabric to fray.

I unrolled the fabric and cut to the plotted lines carefully. After that it's basically following the instructions about basting the seams together with special double sided sticky tape. I found watching their videos over the winter about sewing in general prepared me well. I'm a very hands on mechanical person, hobbyist machinist, ex pro woodworker etc so I'm familiar with layout and carefully measuring etc.

It really is about as simple as you can imagine. My machine is def not a hobby machine and a walking foot makes a huge difference. I think it came out great and I'm well pleased with the results. I would think a Stack Pack would be about the same level of difficulty. On a scale of 1-10, I'd say making your own canvas like this is about a 2-3. I'm working up the courage to try a new dodger as mine is spent.

I'll get some pics on the boat next week still don't have the sails on yet.
