Hi all, I'm getting back into sailing after being a landlubber for 30 yrs and saw this ketch in the Berkeley Marina today. What are the hoops/yokes on this boats sail rigging?

Thats a Freedom rig... basically it works on the same principle as Wind Surfer sails....

That is the Derek M Baylis, a Wylie 65. You can read all about it here:

I sailed that boat when it was undergoing sea trials. The Derek M... is hull #1. Hull #2 was commissioned for Randy Repass, better known as the founder of West Marine.

There were steering issues the day I was at the helm, so it was hard to get a feel for the boat. But it was pretty incredible to have that amount of waterline on such a lightweight ketch. The boat is so fast that even downwind can end up being upwind. The boat accelerates more like a catamaran than a monohull. When you grab a puff, you don't heel--you just zoom.
