I've begun looking into coatings, like Maxijacket, that are intended to protect vulnerable areas (splices) from UV and chafe, and in some cases, improve
rope grip in jammers and on winches. As often happens, other questions come up.
Some of the products are rubbery and offer considerable improvement in hand grip. At first I didn't like what I felt; I'm used to the smooth feel of a splice under my fingers. But then I realized that increased grip has certain advantages in places like the
spinnaker halyard and
safety tethers; things you don't want getting away from you when the
boat jerks.
Does anyone do anything to improve the grip of
rope ends? What? Is there anyway a high-friction coating on a
halyard end or tether end could be a negative? I can see it would be a negative if it rubbed on a sail (lazy jack) or another line (tackle). In general, I would expect more slippery coatings to wear longer.
