In my quest to chase down leaks, I removed the bolts and chainplate from one stay yesterday. One of the 28 year old bolts broke off in my hand. Whoops.

These are M10 stainless, 90 mm long. They are A2-70 quality, which I think means they're 304 stainless. I have been trying to find a US supplier who carries this size in 316 ( A4?) but seem to be having a difficult time. All the suppliers that are popping up on my search engine are either in Australia, UK, or China. I think it's because this latest version of Google sees my IP address and THINKS it knows where I am. It's wrong.

Can you recommend a supplier in the USA that will sell me ten 316 M10 x 90mm bolts, with nuts and washers?

Most fastener retailers should be able to get them for you. They will have to be a special order. They will most likely take a couple of weeks to arrive. They will be insanely priced when compared to something close in an SAE size.

That has been my experience when ordering hardware for a big Dehler.

Thanks for the lead. They do stock 10M x 90mm in 316, but only full threaded. They do have partially threaded in 18-8. I'm going to keep looking around for some partially threaded and in 316, if I can find it. If I cannot, it's good to know I can at least get the 304 version.

Have you ever been able to actually order a small handful of parts from anyone listed on ThomasNet? I went through the first half dozen of those listings, and they just don't seem to be much help for the guy who needs 8 bolts. They seem to be geared up as sources for people planning production runs of a thousand.

I'm basically trying to find someone that will let me just add a few items to my cart, fill in my ship to/bill to, and specify FedEx International for shipping.

Titanium? It's US made and they claim that most bolts are in stock.

Canibul, I may be overstating the obvious here but are you pulling and inspecting the chainplates? YOu will probably need new ones. If the bolts are shot its likely the chainplates are shot as well.

My suggestion...if you use titanium, well, even if you use stainless better use some Tefgel or similar. Minimize corrosion by a LOT!

The way the chain plates are built on this boat it's not hard to inspect them. The corrosion on this one is very localized....from what I've seen so far. I found that there was nothing left in the way of bedding under the deck mounted plate. The water that was leaking in gathered at the lowest corner, as water is wont to do, and dripped down this one bolt. It turned black and corroded right where the lock nut met the threads. Naturally enough. Only one of the bolts was in really bad shape. The others are showing their age, but they're okay. I had the rigging tested last year when we bought it, it all passed with flying colors. I think this is an isolated bolt issue but still want to just replace them all.

It forms an oxide film almost immediately on exposure to air. This is what protects it from corrosion almost forever. I wouldn't coat it with anything. It behaves really well with dissimilar metals unlike stainless and aluminum.

Doh! I forgot about them and I use Fastenal all the time. They are the go to guys for specialty items and have a store right here in my town. Too easy.

Fastenal is a great resource. If they don't have what your looking for they can always make it. I needed some BSW bolts in 316 and no place I looked had them in the length that I needed. No problem. They made them custom and a week and a half later I had them in my hand.
