Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

Hi good people.
Check of the rig today has given me something to look into.
Does anyone have any comments of the picture below. No cracks, minimal surface staining and the rig was checked by a surveyour 7 months ago..
Have not been in any “ real weather “ that might have stressed the ( in my opinion)

I would expect that unless the toggle/pin were restricted in some way or the stay was very loose that the toggle and turnbuckle would self-align.

Mabe iam being to fussy?
Concern is the there is a pressure point were the turn buckle meets the toggle.
As they are not on the same centre line.

Re: Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

The pix are not from the best angle to be sure, but it looks like the toggles are not "toggling"... that is, not performing their function correctly. Possibly too tight a fit on the pin that attaches them to the chain plate, or somehow seized.

Try tapping on the toggle in the direction that would correct the misalignment and see if they move. If they don't, I'd slack the rig, disassemble and inspect everything. They normally give no problems, so something is agley.

Re: Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

Ausluke, do me a favour and take a pic from a different angle so I can see what shrouds are welded onto that base. Also, post a pick of the boat, from the beam, so we can see at least ⅔ of the mast.

Then, lie down at the base of the mast, looking up the slide track to see if your mast is 100% true - it can rake or bend aft but not sideways. Then, when sailing, do the leeward shrouds appear a bit loose?

It appears you are worried about it in the direction that is not a worry. If that were not aligned for and aft then it would be a worry. But not side to side.

Re: Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

The pin seems stuck in the hole. Undo the tension and see why the toggle failed to align. Maybe the pin is a tad too big a diameter (a metric pin in an imperial hole or the other way round, e.g.)?

Is the bottom of the eye of the turnbuckle screw hitting the chainplate?

Re: Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

It appears that all the load on the right hand toggle is being taken by the left side leg and that the right hand leg is in compression. This appears to be caused by there being insufficient angle on the deck fitting. I cannot perceive that there is anything you could do to remedy it without changing or modifying the deck fitting.

Re: Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

The bottom pin is free to move ( toggle to chain plate ). Abit of pressure on the stay moves it sideways then it springs back.
Im prity sure its an issue with the toggle to turn buckle attachment.
Looking like a strip down will shed the light.
Cheers for the comments will post an outcome.

Re: Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

If pressing on the stay aligns it then the stay is too loose. Have you tried tightening it?

Re: Toggle misalignment. Opionions please!

A stay is a stay, and a shroud is a shroud. A stay cannot by definition be a shroud and vice versa. Just pointing out a very common misuse of very common nautical terms. Just as a bow is not a stern.
