Tillerpilot to Monitor windvane interface.

I know that I can use a linear tillerpilot to control the vane on my monitor while motoring. Does anyone have a diagram or a link to help me fab this? Thanks, Don

we did it. There is really nothing complicated about it. A mount for the tiller pilot on the stern at about the same height as the wind blade weight or clamp; and a fitting on the weight or clamp to take the end of the pilot arm.

Delivered a small steel centre cockpit that had the tiller pilot set up near the cockpit facing fore and aft.. then had two lines, one direct to the TP arm attached to a ring on a steel pin.. the line from the other side led to a point behind the TP and through a small single block back down to the same pin and attached to the ring.
The composite fitting on the end off the arm was drilled through to accommodate the pin.. when you wanted to use the TP you inserted the pin and hit auto.. and centred and locked the wheel.

The thing is to make sure the travel of the tiler pilot does not excede the travel of the windvane. With both the Monitor and our Aries, it's about 9" up from the vane pivot point.

Thanks, folks. My old IOR boat has such a reverse transom, it's like 5 feet from the pushpit. Maybe I can extend the piston portion of the tp.

Hey Vortex, You can use a push-pull cable (aka Morse cable) to mount the TP anywhere and transfer the piston motion to the vane... See the link estarzinger posted.. here

We did that set up on an old 1979 admirals cup boat. Just drilled and tapped the counterbalance and got a ball fitting from McMaster and Car. It worked fabulously!

A line was attached to either side of the vane gear and when the TP retracted it pulled one line to turn to port.. when it extended it pulled the other to turn to stbd.. only any good while maintaining a course not for 90 degree turns or tacking for example, but great for long distance course keeping.

uess I was silly using
I would advise removing the vane and using another small vane or arm on which to attach the autopilot drive.

Otherwise the vane will tend to drive the pilot and sometimes against what the pilot is trying to do.

Result: stuffed pilot. Been there done that. But I guess I was silly using the pilot when there was some wind. The system is meant for no/light winds. Works OK then.
