The price for a whole new rig
Hi all
I am toying with the idea of purchasing a project boat (34 foot aluminum Blue water pilot house) but it has absolutley no rig ..........can someone give me an approximate cost to rig something this size........I would love new but the budget will most likely make me look at used.........and it will be deck stepped.
Thanks

Re: The price for a whole new rig
Used, or new? Do you have the fittings, do you know how to rig it? A turnkey mast for a boat this size I would ballpark at $20,000. It could be more, could be a lot less.
If you can find a workable rig in a boatyard it could be a lot less.
For a lot of older boats it is often cheaper to just buy something else with a mast in place than to replace a broken one.

Re: The price for a whole new rig
There is nothing , no running rigging or standing rigging ......I kinda figured it could be done for 30 or 40 K

Re: The price for a whole new rig
Bern, where are you located?
If somewhere there are lots of riggers, start looking at broken masts of the same section size: they can be sistered, and should be fine. If you are far from a yachting center, it will be more $$ and generally harder.
I'm guessing your estimate, for all new stuff, should be ballpark, excluding radar, radios, etc., based on our costs after a dismasting in 1996, on a 36 foot, keel stepped mast boat.

Re: The price for a whole new rig
That means there are also no sails. You are in for a major expense.

Re: The price for a whole new rig
I replaced my entire rig on a 36' ketch rigged Nauticat motorsailer about 2 years ago with all new Selden stuff and the cost was about $42,000.00 total.

Re: The price for a whole new rig
Looks like we were talking about different things, I was thinking of just the mast. Boom, rigging, sails, would easily push it past $30,000.
As mentioned, once an older boats looses its mast it is often cheaper to buy a different boat.

Re: The price for a whole new rig
I would agree with the posts saying better to buy a whole used boat if you are on a budget even if only to take the rig& sails off it. Depends where you are but sometimes you can find boats with hull damage at auction from the insurance company for very little money in comparison to a new rig. If you are capable of taking it off & fitting to your hull ( not rocket science) it is the way to go. You need to inspect the rig first of course.
Hope that helps

Re: The price for a whole new rig
Hi Bern74,
I just replaced the running and standing rigging on my 50' ketch. Total price was around $26k, but everything had to be replaced including re-engeneering of parts on which the mast stands (keel stepped). I didn't replace the sails, that was going to cost another $10k. This was done in Sydney Australia so elsewhere the prices would likely be different, but you are talking about a fairly significant investment.
