The Junk Rig

Dear all,

I would like to start a discussion on the Junk Rig,
I have no experience with this type of sail, and have been trawling the internet to find information,
what are the benefits, can it be installed on any yacht or do you have to re step the mast more towards the bow?
Can you have foresails and a junk main?
I know Jester had a Junk RIg and obviously coined the jester challenge.
you very rarely see them on cruising yachts.
For single handers it must make life very easy for rigging etc, but are they known for being dangerous in a bad storm?

Hi Gracies... I think the main reason for not seeing many Junk rigs is its to unconventional for most... in fact they are surprisingly efficient...
Ok you can't win races round the cans on em but... for lazy cruising they are great.. and folks sail all over with them...
Check out YouTube for MingMing... a Junk rig Corribee 21 thats cruised up in the Artic Circle...
They are worth serious thought... depending on ones sailing style...lol

Re: The Junk Rig

depends on the size and place it is advertised,
junk (Sail) Boats For Sale

junk rigs have been used for years in asia,,,,,other parts of the world frown on them

who know were the OP will be when he tries to sell it,,,,,

i am interested in the junk rigs as you can see by my last posting,,, thought they might be an easy way to single-hand a larger sailboat

Re: The Junk Rig

boatman,
i am currently getting my website up and running, and then you can see my work in progress on my Havsfidra.
The main interest in junk rig is to clear up some of the standing rigging on the deck, to allow more movement and space which is of course very limited on a 6m.
I am searching the forums and have also found the junk rig associtation, but now im goinjg to find the corribee you mentioned, very interesting!

Gracies, you might want to check out "Voyaging On A Small Income" by Annie Hill. Very down to earth discussion based on long experience and of course bunch of other very useful info.

Re: The Junk Rig

Once again i can´t praise this forum enough, great information from everybody.

The videos on you tube of the junk rigged corribee ming ming are pretty intense, the owners book ( <TITLE>Introduction to the junk-rigged Corribee Mingming )which is mentioned on the website Introduction to the junk-rigged Corribee Mingming also looks like a must read for solo yachtsmen in small offshore cruisers.

I've been considering switching to the junk rig for awhile now, mostly because of my advancing age, but it also seems it would be easier on my 40 year old boat. I'm never in a hurry anymore, and my Cal 25 sails very well to windward so I'm thinking that I can live with the loss of some ability. Just ordered the latest MingMing book.

FYI, Annie Hill is a real live person. She currently has a 26 ftr with a junk rig somewheres in Oz as I recall, or somewheres where they talk funny.
