Tefgel as winch grease?

Hey folks,

I have a big tube of tefgel aboard that I intend to use for greasing my new kiwi prop.

Anyone ever used it as a winch grease. I can't really see why it wouldn't be a good idea. Then, I may well be missing something here.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Cheers,

James

No no, dont do it, tefgel is really sticky, is not grease or lube ,,its a anti corrosive compound, hell even is froking expensive...

Another "horrible idea".

Re: Tefgel as winch grease?

Funny, I just spent about five hours yesterday breaking down and cleaning a pair of new-to-me used winches. Hours and hours spent cleaning hundreds of teeth with a knife to remove old grease that had turned green and gotten hard. Not sure what kind it was.

Apparently the PO had been very enthusiast about protecting his gear to the point of rendering it inoperable, the pawls where packed tight with the stuff.

Grease for the roller bearings, lights oil for the pawls. Bronze gears need nothing.

Exactly!!! light oil for the pawls, Lewmar sell small botles with a special lube oil, and light grease in the bearings, the rest nothing ...

I coat the gear teeth using a throw-away or acid brush.

Me too.. very light coating. I just did all mine for the first time...

I did use tef gel on the stainless steel bolts holding the winches together (as a precaution) to make sure I could always get them out but I would never use that on the gears, pawls, etc.

Re: Tefgel as winch grease?

When you're rebuilding/re-lubing your winches, make certain that there are outlets for any water which might want to puddle underneath of the winches. As said spot is one of the top 5 onboard where serious corrosion occurs.

Re: Tefgel as winch grease?

What can I use in the third world where none of the fancy expensive western stuff is readily not available? Just normal car grease and engine oil? Better than nada? Not "no no no, terrible idea"?

Re: Tefgel as winch grease?

Grease is oil, for example mineral oil, that has been emulsified, often with soap. It is used mostly to provide lubrication in rarely serviced moving parts such as bearings where liquid oil lubrication is not possible. It can also do some other things like protect against corrosion or water infiltration by displacement.

So to answer your question, yes normal car grease should work. Mainly you're out to protect and lubricate the roller bearings. These are usually made from tool steel whereas different components of the winch are stainless steel, bronze, or aluminum depending on the manufacturer.

As mentioned, don't grease the pawls but use light oil instead. Looks like a couple guys here grease their spur gear teeth. Depends on the teeth but probably can't hurt, unless excessive amount is used. Even then it won't actually damage anything, just clog up the works.

Plenty of good grease options available in developing countries (at least here in Central America). You dont need a grease with a fancy brand name on it, just one chemically similar and appropriate for the job...they probably come from the same factory anyway.

For example, white lithium grease is very commonly available and used by many for winch maintenance. Machine oil is widley available too.
