Suggested Rigging Reference Book

Hi all,

I am looking for suggestions on a good rigging reference book to have aboard the boat. Something that will provide good DIY explanations on rig tuning, maintanence, etc.

This will be a great x-mas gift for my husband and will also come in handy for the next sailing season, as we need to do some rig tuning as well.

So, what is the best "bible" on rigging?

Thanks all

One of the best I ever read for tuning the rig is the free one from Selden Spars. It is terrific.

If you walk into almost any rigging shop you will find this on a shelf somewhere. It has certainly followed me around since my first rigging job.

I have the Brion Toss and it's great, but a more pictorial work is Ivar Dedekam's Sail and Rig Tuning:

Sail and Rig Tuning: Amazon.ca: Ivar Dedekam: Books

By the way, if you want to gift in a more practical way, buy him one of these suggested books and a nice Loos Gauge.

Re: Suggested Rigging Reference Book

Thanks all,

Sounds like The Complete Rigger Apprentice is the book to get. I am also thinking I might pick up the Loos Gauge as well, however they are not cheap, but we will need one anyway. For the size rigging we have I need to purchase the Loos Gauge PT3, so anyone know where to get one of those at a reasonable price? Anyone looking to sell one?

If by "reasonable" you mean "low" then not likely unless you can find one used. I can buy Loos products wholesale and even then I am shocked at what they cost.

I would be very careful buying one used, and would not even consider one that did not visually at least appear to be in excellent condition. If it has been damaged or in anyway lost it's calibration (maybe not obvious) then it is at least worthless and at worst dangerous.

Re: Suggested Rigging Reference Book

Hi, we bought a Loos PT3 about a year ago and have since replaced our standing rigging and then our chain plates. The tool may seem expensive but for those of us without all the years of tuning by touch it removes the guesswork. We have a chart for our model boat with all the proper setttings using the PT3 and in conjunction with a rigging book it is pretty easy to tune up your rig. It also never hurts to check the tension from time to time. Jim
