Sticky, rusty sails

Hi All,

I have a staysail in fantastic condition structurally, but less so aesthetically.

I want to remove a rust stain as well as the remains of glue from old sail numbers.

I have so far resisted using acetone or turps for removing the glue and have not used the usual rust removing liquids as I don't know what these products will do to the sail fabric....It is white dacron.

Can anyone help.

Old glue can be removed with a strong citrus based cleaner and a sharp scraper very carefully. rust with oxalic acid at least overnight and probably longer. You won't hurt the Dacron, I do it professionally at Vacuwash Australia.
