Staysail furling conversion

Hi all,

I am about to convert my staysail to roller furling. I've had a look at the various how-tos, and I note that sailrite recommend removing the existing luff tape before attaching the furling tape.

My staysail is made from Challenge 7.3 sail cloth, so it is a lot sturdier than the lightweight genoa used in the sailrite video.

Looking at my staysail, I feel like the existing luff tape could stay, and that I could simply remove the bolt rope, thus giving me an easy reversal if I find the furling does not work out as planned as well as lending strength to a sail that is likely to be used right up to the point of switching to a storm jib, or even in place of the storm jib.

Any thoughts on this approach?

Photo shows the current construction of the luff. (10 meters)

Re: Staysail furling conversion

How do you plan to get the bolt rope out non-destructively? If you can do so, I see no reason that it would not work.

OK, reassuring.

I think it will just pull out... but I am about to start a separate thread because... wait for it... I may not NEED to replace the luff tape. (Though I THINK I will still want to replace the bolt rope.)

I would tack the new question on here, but often people miss the extra question.

Stay tuned...
