Standing Rigging Replacement

I'm planning on replacing all the SS standing rigging wire (or atleast ordering the stuff to do so), the boat is equipped end to end with Sta-lok fittings that all look in really good condition. What else do I need other than the wire? Do I/Should I replace all of the little wedges that are in the Sta-Lok fittings or are those reusable as well? Anything else I should be considering replacing?

Re: Standing Rigging Replacement

You will need to replace the cones in each fitting and possibly the former if it is in bad shape.

It is recommended you use new wedges when installing Sta-Locs on new wire. Only other thing you will need is a wire cutter ("rigging cutter", "wire rope cutter") of adequate size and quality to leave you a clean end to work with.

I'm assuming that by "end to end" you're not speaking of bow to stern, but both ends of each wire. I only say this because I see more people that have Sta-lok or Norseman fittings on the lower end of the shrouds only. I have all swage fittings all around high & low and I envy yours! Though, I must add, I do inspect and replace my 15 shrouds at regular intervals.

Aye. Should have said top to bottom and end to end i suppose. I have yet to find a swage fitting on the standing rigging and I think I've inspected them all (10 wires, 24 total fittings) or something there abouts.

Re: Standing Rigging Replacement

I first rigged, then re-rigged in the UK, with Sta-Loks. As said before you will need new cones; the old formers will probably serve. Personally I gave up on wire cutters - just too uneven a cut. A good sharp hack saw will do the job in reasonable time and leave a clean, perpendicular cut. If you like your power tools then try a grinder with a cut-off blade - just be very careful not to nick the wire near the cut.
