Sta-Lock Forestay

I'm taking apart my furlex rolling furler for the first time it's also super old. The foils are bent.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the sta-lock.

Your advice is appreciated.

Tap the StaLok fitting up the wire till you can pry the outer wires apart and twist off the cone. You'll then be able to slip the StaLok fitting off the wire and the extrusions off the wire. Since you shouldn't try and reassemble the StaLok fitting in it's current location, would be easiest to cut the wire at the fitting. That will probably require new wire as the wire will be shorter by the amount you cut off. Order new formers and cones along with the new wire if the wire will be too short.

Is the "cone" inside the stay cable? Forgive my ignorance.

Yes it's around the inner core of the wire and outer core is what see bent around it. If you are pulling the extrusion because they are bent, might try and straighten them in place. Lay the stay out out on a dock or other flat surface and try and bend the bent pieces back straight. Way less work and cheaper than replacing. May not work but worth a try.

I just did this recently to replace a 25 year old forestay.

Its a bit like pushing a car uphill with a wet noodle.

The cone is wedged inside that housing at the base of the wire. On mine at least (hood seafurl?) there wasnt any room, at least initially, to do anything at the base. Pounding with a mini sledge hammer for hours on the top, masthead end of the stay, while returning to the base to look for movement and helplessly fiddle with the wire ends, ultimately popped her loose. I was NOT confident it was going to be successful.
