Spinaker into genakker, anyone

Have a standard downwind kite on my 34 footer which i dů not use much due to complicated hoist etc...I was thinking if it would be possible to rig it as a genakker and maybe add a sock /furler on it? Would it work?

Re: Spinaker into genakker, anyone

It will not perform well at all. A spinnaker has to fly, it doesn't just hang in the manner of a jib. In other words, it supports its own weight, pulling forward on the halyard, not down. A gennaker has a distinct luff that helps it achieve a shape with lift. The symmetrical spinnaker masquerading as a gennaker won't be able to achieve that shape. It will also not be able to achieve a clean leech the way an a-kite or gennaker can.

cruising is entirely about showing up--in boat shoes.

It would work better to have one cut for that purpose. to fly a symmetrical sail as an asymmetrical puts the draft in the wrong spot.
Why not put a snuffer on the existing sail?

we have converted a few with reasonable results. The tack need to be moved back a bit and the clew raised. Sometime the luff profile will need to redrawn. It is quite easy on a sail with crosscut bottom, the full radial cuts are difficult! The sail would need to be in good condition to justify the cost.
