Soiled Sail

When I purchased my sailboat it came with a genoa sail. Due to a previous fresh water flood, the sail is stained with engine oil. When you fly it, the sail looks like a map of the world. I was told it was seldomly used and the material is still crisp. I get a lot of looks and I'm teased quite a bit about the appearance. I really can't afford to replace it now but I'm wondering if it can be cleaned or dyed to camouflage the stains.

Re: Soiled Sail

Try talking to a local sail loft or three, as well as Sail Care. And one other way to find Sail Care is via searching for the LeMauney Re-resining process.

Also, if the sail has any Kevlar in it, then it's as alergic to bleach as Vampires are to sunlight. And I stay away from bleach, period, when cleaning anything that's not belowdecks.

Re: Soiled Sail

I would tell the guys who ask this is the newest cuben sail.

If it is just the looks, use it now, replace when you can.

I had little luck removing stains from sails and oil is probably one of the worst cases.

Re: Soiled Sail

I agree with what barnakiel said. Oil stains dacron sails just the same as clothing, and since the cloth still is good, I'd put up with the looks, and wear out the sail. There is no shame in getting the use out of it, don't let any disparaging remarks bother you.

I have heard Oxyclean can work.. It's gentle and worth a try with a medium brush. Never tried it, but it wasn't mentioned.

Re: Soiled Sail

weephee,

I was thinking about this overnight, and I thought that if it were engine oil which stained your sail, the black stuff is carbon.

Lampblack is also carbon, and people used to have to remove it.

So, what if you google on removing lampblack, and find out if there is something that emulsifies, or dissolves it, and try that?

Re: Soiled Sail

Get yourself some fabric paint and out line the big stains as continents. Add names like a map.
Make it your world.

Re: Soiled Sail

Thanks again for the replies. I'll try both of the suggestions and if that doesn't work, I like the idea of outlining the stains and naming them. Unique idea. Thanks
