Snatch Block Identification And Repair

I have a snatch block that has been on my boats for over thirty years, but alas, the pin that releases the hook for attaching the block has failed.

I do not know the brand; the block has the initials N on one side and U on the other. I am hoping someone knows the brand and/or where I might find a replacement pin.

Happen to have a picture? In reality it probably isn't worth the trouble though, it's probably far easier and likely cheaper to just replace it.

Thanks Greg; easier perhaps, but expensive. I found two identical blocks (except for the absorbent part of the blocks which were a faded white, mine are green) at
sailor's Exchange here in St Augustine, but they want $100 each for them. I have two newer ones that are a bit heavier duty, and another one of these units that are in good shape, so I have enough to get by, but it would be nice to find a pin and spring to fill the hole!

Thanks Tim, NU is indeed one of the Nicro-Fico snap shackles, mine is a standard, non trunnion shackle 5/16th pin set;about $26 bucks from RigRite.com.

Honestly, looking at the level of corrosion on some of the key components of the block. It's time to scrap it, & begin anew (or with a quality, pre-loved one).

Take a look at the Karver KB blocks with a soft shackle. For stronger than almost any snatch block and it fails safe, even if the block explodes the shackle holds the line captive.

Thanks Greg! The Karver shackles certainly look great but a bit pricey.

My two blocks of this style are in good conditon otherwise than just looks and the one with the failed pin. The pre-used blocks of the same vintage are offered locally at $100 a piece, fully serviceable. Since this shackle and its mate are the back ups to two trunion snatch blocks which are considerably newer, I will get replacement parts, and move on.

These are wonderful Nicro Fico blocks from the 70s and 80s. The number is 10120, and I suspect yours are the "teak" version which would make them 10120T. Breaking strenght was 5,000# as I recall, and they could be easily lubricated by removing the axle and roller bearings.

Ronstan probably has parts, and there are so many of the Nicro 11000 series snap shackles out there that you might be able to find replacement pins at a West Marine or good sailboat retailer.

I've got two of these blocks that were purchased new in the early 70's- been on many boats, nearly 50 years old and going strong. Clean them up, see if corrosion has weakened any critical places and enjoy for years more.

A machinist could turn out a new pin on the lathe in about 20 minutes. Find a machine shop. Costs me 6-pack here.
