This feels like a silly rigging question, but I searched and didn't really find an answer.

At anchor should your rigging "creak" with the boat rocking?

My boats (all 2) have always creaked, but that doesn't mean it should even though I have always "assumed" it was normal.

Mine always have before ... but we just pulled the rig and when it when on again we made sure to seal the partner better before putting on the tape and now it is nearly silent.

With a deck stepped mast, I wouldn't think it should have any reason to creak. The only rig creaking I get on my boat is from the boom rocking back and forth. This is rope creak, not rig creak. A line tied to the boom and off to one side fixes it.

My boat never creaks, ever, even when beating close hauled into a stiff chop. Although there is one small spot on the port side deck, where if you step on it just right a bit of the galley cabinetry gives a soft creak. Bugs the hell out of me. Gotta fix that but it's low on the priority list.

The only creak I have at anchor is from the snubber stretching when it's nasty out.

You might want to track down where that creak is. Might be normal, might not.

I have a friend who has an Elan and I helped him out with his windlass. His whole boat creaked when you walked the deck. Finally got up the courage to ask him about it (did not want to seem insulting) and he shrugged and said "All Elans do that." So who knows.

There's been 180 views and only 4 replies. Surely out of those views some more know whether their rigging creaks at anchor when they get waked and rolled.

I have a 1973 Alberg 30. My boat does not creak but I have read that creaking noise from the forward lower shroud could be a warning sign that the chainplate bolts need to be inspected. But, that is just a thought, I am certainly not an expert.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the bulkheads on your boat sit in channels molded into the fiberglass headliner? I’ve been on several boats that exhibit a slight creaking when the deck “slides” imperceptibly over the bulkheads. Perfectly normal for boats built with the interior wood placed in modular sections.

I'm one of those views, but did not intend to post. Because I don't know if it's normal or not.

I can only add that my boat has never made a creaking noise.

On a friend's boat it seems to be the cabinetry that squeaks.

If you think it is the rigging making the noise then that might be worth investigating.

Just a note, I investigate every noise on the boat. This thread is now part of doing that even for “normal” noise.

We were able to get rid of all the creaking finally. Many applications of T-9 and working of blocks and we got rid of it all. The only thing we have now is one line (main sheet) that runs through a loop on the boom. It squeaks no matter what we do. We have to put a dab of lanacote on the loop every few weeks to make it stop. It was very difficult to find. I tried to tape, etc but it all eventually failed.
