Short Sail Track on Extruded Mast

I have an extruded mast that was set up for external furling. I'm not happy with it, and wish to change back to the conventional method using flat slugs. My question is this. The extrusion has the track stopping 14 inches above the top of the boom. So, when dropping the sails the slugs will stop 14 inches above the boom. I'd think that this would cause problems with flaking the sail down and covering it. Is there some way to extend the track further down, say to within 4-6 inches of the top of the boom? Or will that work as is? I'm used to having the track come down almost to boom height.

Some have suggested raising the boom up some, but the sail area is pretty small already and I'd be losing a foot wide strip off the bottom. Im also not too crazy about putting more holes in the mast.

Suggestions? Comments?

Have you considered going to a secondary/external track. You could use one continuous rod as the slug to screw it into, except the last 12", which would require a couple good fasteners.
Or you could get a car track to be held the same way.
