i need help finding out what sheaves i have at the top of the mast. i have a 33 ft morgan and the shivs are frozen and we are pulling the mast in two weeks but i can not find out what the exact dimensions are. any help would be great.i would like to pre order them but cant find the right info any one know where i can find the info

I think its spelled Sheave. A good pair of vernier calipers will enable you to get a pretty accurate measurement. The width and the pin size are the most critical. To get the diameter wrap some thin string around the sheave and divide its length by 3.14. But you should be able to get pretty close by eye.

I pulled the specs on my boat, ordered new ones and they were all wrong. Ended up having styx and rigging make new ones for me. 1 day turn around.

Haha! This topic sure caught my eye. Shivs are not an item generally associated with the yachting crowd! Then again, who knows? Suppose a good shiv could come in handy at times.

Who cares, we know what he meant. Lay off and be helpful. Like mamma always said, if you dont have anything nice to say be quiet. This forum is a great place to get help and information for all, but I see alot of people that want to jump on and correct someone and offer no assistance or only offer a personal view of a question they didnt ask. Ok, it is sheave, one correction is enough.

Just the opposite side of the coin where it's spelled right but someone says: sheeeev

I hope the OP didn't take it as anything more than a joke. This was hilarious and exactly why I clicked on the thread.

I had to find out if the port authority had locked him up and he needed to know how to file his toothbrush down to make a shiv.

Didn't mean to poke fun at you personally, Thinwater, but the word 'shiv' is something I normally associate with Rikers Island, rather than some of the other islands discussed in this forum! Just hit my funny bone, no offense intended ...

In conversation, I've been corrected several times for using landlubber pronunciations of nautical words. And, just now, in fact. Thanks, Stu Jackson for saving me from a future verbal faux pas! A bookish, English major kind of person, I have always pronounced 'sheaves' in the same way as the singular 'sheaf', which is 'sheevs'. So, in a bookbindery or wheat field that would be correct; on a sailboat, apparently, not so much!

It's all good now! The photos of sheaves were instructive.
