Servicing Lewmar Wave Grip model 56ST winches

I am writing this message with a view to seeking your advice how to make a comprehensive service to my Lewmar Wave Grip model 56ST winches.
Recently purchased sailing yacht Baltic 40 built in 1990 has Lewmar 56ST winches which need comprehensive servicing.

In theory the Gear Spindle (Part No. 15000645) may well be removed by lifting with a flat screw driver. However my winch does not allow removal of the gear spindle in that manner.
I
appreciate very much if a piece of practical advice is provided for my attempt.

Re: Servicing Lewmar Wave Grip model 56ST winches

Hi, Gord,

Thank you for your advice with reference to the servicing manual, which refers to "Service Manual Vol 6" for Lewmar 56ST. The service manual Vol 6 contains schematic diagram of 56ST. As I see it the Gear Spindle should be taken out bu just pulling. But it did not work.
Any idea how to take the Gear Spindle out?

Re: Servicing Lewmar Wave Grip model 56ST winches

Hi, Paul and everyone who showed interenst in the problem for lifting the gear spindle of Lewmar 56ST which was manufactured from 1983 to 1991.

The information was established from Lewmar and Winchspares as follows, which benefited my servicing:

Lewmar technical support advised:
If they (the gear spindle) don’t want to come out you can unbolt the centre stem and this will allow the gears to come out. What you will also see in the attached is that there are 3 plastic shims in-between the centre stem and the base. This must be in place and if they are not you will need to make some to stop corrosion. So parts will be available for this winch but not major ones. I hope this helps.

www.winchspares.com responded to my specific enquiry as follows:
ref the 56st
The gear spindle should lift out easy with a screws driver.
if they do not , you have ''corrosion '' around the gear spindle in the base.
the corrosion has expanded the alloy base and holding the gear spindle .
You may have to remove the main centre stem screws ( qty=3) , and lever the stem up to help pull the gear spindles out..
When you re-assemble the winch , you must use the insulation shim x3 between the brass stem and the base ( to reduce corrosion)

I hope the above information would serve anyone facing the similar problem with 56ST.

Re: Servicing Lewmar Wave Grip model 56ST winches

Hi, everyone,

I found the schematic diagrams for old lewmar winched at:
http://www.international-boat-spares...%20VOL%206.pdf

I hope the document is informative for the Lewmar winches manufactured in 1980's.
