San Francisco Bay Sail Makers

New to SF Bay
Need new sails for 49 ft boat.

Don't know any sailmakers.

Have used laminate load path thread sails and were very happy with them.

Cruising short handed - and a lot of sail to handle - points to continued trouble deciding on sailcloth and type/brand.

Does anyone combine fairly high tech sails with local manufacture or are practically all made overseas?

Which lofts give best service even if you are not racing?

Thanks.

Try Pineapple Sails in Alameda. They make high tech sails for both racers and cruisers. Custom made sails in their own sail loft...no cheap quality Chinese stuff. The owners, Kame and Sally are really nice people as well.

The Hood guy takes good measurements and I believe they make them back east in the US

Get Latitude 38, either the print variety at a chandlerey or online (Latitude 38 - The West's Leading Sailing and Marine Magazine you can download the whole magazine). Go to the back of the issue where there is a list of advertisers. THAT'S the list you need.

We had really good work done by Quantum in Brick Cove, Hood would have been the second choice, but as we are sailing in distant ports, the fact Quantum had lofts worldwide was the deciding factor between them.

Re: San Francisco Bay Sail Makers

I second David M's suggestion about Pineapple Sails...

They built our Asym Spinnaker and it works great!

They have a great loft and build everything in house. Kami and Sally are wonderful people and will give you a tour of the loaf if you wish.

Just a question, if you are cruising mostly single handed why such high tech sails? Laminated sails generally don't like prolonged exposure to UV and cruising is hell on sails. Why not 8oz Dacron?

I would ask Kami what his thoughts are on your boat and cruising style.
