Re: Sailrite Alternative

Been down this path. Marina wanted $1600 for shrink wrapping 42' Sabre. Considered buying used equipment, but that is risky without an inspection and that can be difficult to accomplish. Got Sailrite zig zag, 70 yards of PVC fabric, and a couple of miles of heavy thread, all for c. $1100 Very pleased with Sailrite machine and company. (I have other sewing machines FWIW) I figure I got a reusable boat cover for less than shrink wrap and a sewing machine for negative net loss. Gonna make a staysail next using a Sailrite custom designed kit. I'm happy.

Re: Sailrite Alternative

I bought 2 Juki machines from a canvas place going out of business. They were both heavy duty walking foot machines, table mounted. 1 was older and "didn't work", the other was almost new, heavy casting white model.

The "one that didn't work" took 5 min with some oil to free up and ran like a Swiss? Japanese? watch. Sold it for more than I paid for both.

The Juki was about $2500 new, plows through almost anything. Doesn't do zig zag though so I mainly just use it for regular sewing jobs.

Need to work up the courage to do a dodger this spring.

Re: Sailrite Alternative

A couple of questions for senormechanico if he is about?

1. I have an old Singer 201 (black body), with a potted motor, but the motor has burnt out sewing a lot of canvas. Is this worth searching out a motor for, or should I go for another model (see below?)

2. Earlier in this thread, you recommended a Singer 301 - the beige model, as being suitable. Are the 401 slantomatic machines comparable, as there are a few available here in the UK?

Lastly

3. Does a walking foot attachment work as well as an originally built in one?

I would love a Sailrite, but the price of one here in Europe is out of the question (approx 1900 dollars after freight, import duty and tax!)
