sail reefs

hello everyone
we just purchased a catalina27 but our main sail is shot. we are having a new one made but we were wondering if we should stick to the standard 1reef point or spend the extra on a 2nd . a friend of ours said that with a cat 27 we should never need the 2nd reef . thoughts suggestions. thanks

If you want to sail in over 20knots of wind. I would put in a second reef point. To save a few dollars you are limiting yourself........BEST WISHES

I agree with I2F but where are you sailing the boat? If it is a lake Sailor and you will never go out in 20 knots it might not be worth it but if you live on SF Bay and you might never go out in less than 20 knots of wind I would get a second one for sure.

It will be the best spent $100 ever. If you are where the wind really blows in the 30's I would put in a third reef. Nothing worse than calling off a great day, because you can't reduce any farther in sail area.

You absolutely, positively, will never, ever, in a million years need that second reef.

(unless of course you don't spend the $100 to get it - sorta like life jackets)

Seriously the question remains where do you sail and what is the max wind your area has seen in the last 3 years.

Hear him, but get them to put the cringles in anyway! 100 dollars vs new stick and wires and asstd bits of string is a no-brainer choice.
And while they're knocking holes in your rags and your wallet's open, get them to put a flattener in. It's a single clew-point halfway up the leach towards the first reef. Yanking that home, and hauling in a fist of cunningham delays reefing by at least 5 knots of breeze.
Maybe you'll never even need the first reef then?

I can't help but think the $$ is well spent. If the winds are stronger than forecast and you're out there with all the fur flying in winds stronger than you really want, it's a nice comforting feeling to know you can slow things down a bit. At some point you'll be selling your boat as well, and it can't hurt to have more options than less when you do.
