Sail Pack Kit

My husband is interested in putting a sail pack kit on the main. I am wondering when you reef the sails, how do you tie the sail to the boom? Is the sail pack going to be in the way?

G'Day Velma,

The simple answer is that you don't need to tie in the reef points. Whoopie! Just drop the halyard, hook the tack on the horns and tension the outhaul. The bunt of the sail just lies quietly in the boom-bag (as some folks call them).

When we get our next main built, I'm not even going to have any reef points sewn in... have never used the ones in this sail!

We have a MackPack on our mainsail, full batten with 2 reef points. When we reef, we simply drop the main into the MackPack and don't worry about it. If you're really into sail shape and such, you'll probably want to tie the sail off on the boom, but if you're just into getting back into the cockpit quickly and safely (we can't reef from the cockpit, David has to go to the mast), dropping it into the MackPack and tying it off works. When we were cruising the NW & SW Caribbean, we reefed regularly and never had any trouble doing it this way, even though it wasn't the best for sail shape. Somehow when you're out of sight of land for over a week and need to get the boat back under you, it's not so critical to be perfect! Buena Suerte! Jan

I have the Doyle Stack Pack with a full battened main and single line reefing. I have premarked the main halyard for the two reef points. I drop the halyard to the mark and winch in the appropriate reef line. Done!! the excess sail lays in the Stack Pack. All from the cockpit.
