Rigging - Hydraulic crimping tools

I have been given a NEW set of standing rigging that needs to be shortened also fitting guard rails and a centre plate hoist cable, so plenty to do.

That tool only goes up to 5mm wire rope. You'd have to have a pretty tiny dinghy if you have standing rigging that size.

If I read correctly, it is their fittings that take up to 5mm wire. That tool has much larger die than that.

I bought one of those tool from fleabay and used it to crimp some of my wire halyard ends. I tested it before by cutting one crimped ferrule to see that wire and ferrule had "melted" together.

The only problem is to keep the two part of the die well aligned to do a clean job.

Navtec (and others) make mechanical terminations that are as strong as swages. And they can be installed or replaced with simple hand tools. They are every bit as strong and reliable as a swage. I would recommend that type of terminal for the bottom. Have a machine swage the tops. I would be leery of using an uncalibrated hand swage tool on critical rigging.

I think given the cost of the tool, are you not better off just walking into the riggers' and asking them to swage the ferrules?

Get Norseman/StaLok or other self installed terminals. Way way way better than swages and they are reusable with new cones if should keep the boat long enough to want rerig it.

I agree with Trannsmitterdan on the Navtec fittings. I replaced 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch stay and all you need is 2 wrenches. Even I could do it and the system is the coolest thing since crunchy peanut butter!! Larry
