Guys,

Bar tight is not a scientific value. The above cited guides explain how to tension any rig properly.

Since GRP hulls are flexible over tightening can distort the hull. This is not rocket science and anyone who can read, use a tape measure can properly tension a rig. I don't understand why anyone would take these unscientific ad hoc approaches when the proper methods are readily available to anyone who wants to do it right.

True enough. We use a hydraulic pump with a gage and set the caps to 30,000 pounds for cruising and 40,000 for racing. On smaller boats it is best to use a Loose Gage but I've tuned so many boats its just second nature setting the caps hard. (ie hard enough so the top does not fall off at 12 knots true)

Don't! Go sailing and tension the leewards lest you drive the spar through the bottom of the boat.

Trust me, -50 rod at 30,000 is bar hard.
