Rig Inspection East coast Australia

Last year we changed our insurance coverage to Pantenaus. No issues and a lot less money than our previous US coverage. Upon receipt of our renewal quote from them this year they informed us that we needed a rig inspection.

Can anyone tell me who can provide such a service as everywhere we have inquired no one wants to, or is able to supply a certificate. 1 bloke even stated that they could only certify the standing rigging if it was all replaced with new!!!

The way this is going we may have to change back to our original provider in the US but this coverage was a lot more money. Any help would be appreciated.

Everyone we have asked so far, either riggers or surveyors will not provide this service as they do not want to accept any liability?? It is Australia after all.

Lot's of providers will do the inspection, they just won't provide a certificate for insurance. We had the rig tuned in Darwin last April and the rigger stated the everything was in great shape however he wouldn't provide a certificate either.

Try Roni - he's a mate of mine and races with us. He's an excellent pro sailor, funny as all buggery, maker of fine hungarian stew and all round good guy.

Where (Canada? really?) are you, undercutter?

If you are near Mooloolaba, I would suggest you contact Colin Quin (see Quin Rig | Servicing the Marine Industry since 1961 for contact details).

Quin will survey a rig. And issue a certificate.

He does have a reputation for charging double of what he quotes for a job.

Re: Rig Inspection East coast Australia

Scott Keogh, in the Manly Boat Harbor area inspected our rig and gave us a written report on it. I do not know whether this sort of report would be acceptable to Pantaenius. But you could give him a call and ask. Also, fwiw, there is an engineer, first name, Simon, sorry, don't remember his last name, but he and Scotty worked for Sparmaster in the same time frame, and Scotty could fill you in about Simon, too. It was this Simon who ran the numbers, and redesigned our replacement mast for our first Insatiable.

Thanks Ann,

we are actually anchored outside Manly harbour as we speak. this would work for us as we are scheduled to have some warranty work done on our genset on Monday.

We were delayed quite a bit in Bundaberg redoing the brightwork and then I broke my heel and ribs due to a fall. Hobbling around now but at least we (and I) are moving again.

If you're in Brisbane, check out Geoff Cruse 07 3396 8420 or 0409 968 421.

Alternatively, try Greg Christie at Everything Marine at The Boatworks ,Coomera 0408 981 410.

So sorry to learn about your injury--bad luck. Jim and I trust Scotty. I hope he is able to work to your time frame, he is a very busy guy.

If you haven't already found out, you're in a great area for doing "stuff", and Brisbane's only 1/2 hr. or so away by train, so lots is open for you in addition to boat work.

Re: Rig Inspection East coast Australia

Does your insurer require your rigging to be certified or just require a condition report, there is a difference.

Certification may require that certain materials were used in certain ways to fabricate and fit the rigging, this is probably why you are having problems getting a responsible expert to provide you with a certificate.

A condition report may state that the rig was inspected, you informed the expert that it was a certain age and installed by a provider skilled in yacht rigging and that there are no obvious defects based upon a visual inspection.

Ask your insurer if they can provide examples of what they would normally require.

Good idea, RaymondR. You would think that more specific input might help. The devil is in the details.

That was my first thought, when I had mine done for insurance all I need was an inspection report, and as it was in good condition with no significant defects the insurance company signed off on it, no request for a certificate signed in blood
