Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

Hi all,

I have a Bene First 45f5 from 1990. The standing rigging is rod and most likely original and as such due for replacement. I have talked to a few riggers and they say change it all, no point in trying to save costs by reusing some of the rod. And quote me USD 10.500 for the job. A lot of money.
Talked to my sailmaker today and he suggested to make the switch to 19x1 wire seeing as the boat is used mainly for cruising and not regatta, and that if I get som help to pull the mast I should be able to make the switch myself.

Can you offer me some advice? We are planning/hoping to do a trip from Northern Europe, down to Spain and over to the Caribbean and back to Europe, maybe as early as this year and I really want the rigging to be ready for it...

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

If you're not racing, change it out to wire - rod is far more expensive, and riggers with the tools to swage (actually "re-head" the rod) can be few and far between.

I had to get a shroud replaced and I had to order it from an out of state rigger. It was $400 for the piece and over $100 for shipping (they generally can't ship rod sections UPS because of the large radius required to coil it, so it usually must go freight).

Your rod rigging may be Nitronic. I wonder if it's worth just having the ends Dye Penetrant inspected and continue to use it...? Just thinking out loud....

Re: Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

That could be a solution, but none of the riggers want to do this, they say the rod itself is too old. One way to go about it is to try to re-head the rod and "hope for the best". The fore and back stays are of wire type. If i make the switch i obviously need new terminals, do I need to change stuff at the spreaders to?

I really appreciate all help on this!

I wouldn't use a rigger to inspect it, find a machine shop or aerospace shop to do it.

Re: Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

If you want to change from rod, do consider using Dyform wire, now sometimes called Compact Strand wire. This is considerably stronger and less stretchy than 1x19 construction, readily available, can use mechanical terminals like Norseman or Stalok, and is just as easy to work with as 1x19. We've used it for the last 19 years on two different boats and think highly of it.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

Just my opinion but when rod fails it fails instantly and when 1x19 fails it fails a strand at a time and gives you a bit of warning like rust and fishhooks. I would not repair the rod or use rod at all if it were my boat.

kindest regards,

That's the answer I found on my last boat that had rod rigging when I checked on it with Navtec. Normally only the heads are bad and can be cut off and reformed. They did recommend changing the screw fittings every 10 years.

That boat had its' original 25 year old rod rigging where I got rid of the boat and it still that was fine.

Re: Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

Not really suggesting you stay with the rod..... but if it has no defects... not sure it ever goes bad....? Unlike wire.... that embeds moisture in the strands and with SS the low oxygen corrosion issue.....

Have you considered spectra line for standing rigging?

Re: Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

I have dyform wire and norseman fittings.
my boat is 1997 and I think the rigging is as old as the boat.
What would you replace it with?
Would you reuse the Norseman fittings?

Cones and formers in first place and the wire, but be ware that is a lot of years even for the terminals, i see some old stalock terminals cracked , so a good acid clean out in the terminals and look for suspicious cracks, or weird spots in the terminals....

Re: Replace rod rigging or switch to wire?

Did consider dyneema/spectra. But none of the riggers here (Norway) have any experience with it. And want to sell me rod rigging. Anyone know if there is anything to change besides the terminals?
