Relative Sail Area - Marconi vs Chinese Lug

I have been reading about the "junk" rig.
Most people recomend having the same sail area as a marconi sloop would on the same boat but they also say that there is no (easy) way to increase sail area for light winds with the junk.

My question is:
Couldn't one just increase the sail area and leave the sails reefed most of the time?
