Recommend me a winch

I want an electric winch to

• Lift the tender - fully loaded
• Raise the main
• Adjust the reefing lines

I have manual Antal winches now, the biggest are 52's

Do I need that big
Should I stick with Antal or can I do better for less money
Do they come up second hand - with all the huricane boats south of the the US is there a recycle yard there?

Those vertical ones look nice and neat. I will need to mount it through a shelf/dashboard so the bottom half of the winch will be visable. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Dave, I have not seen ARco electric winches, but I have Arco 40s for halyard winches and think that they are pretty poor engineering. Main issue is no bearings on the shafts for the intermediate gears... just bronze gears turning on s/s shafts. I've had serious problems with them despite frequent lubing. My older Barients soldier onwards with needle bearings on all those spots. And for what it's worth, all the other winches that I've owned over the years had such bearings.

Hutton told me that he didn't think those bearings were necessary... I just can't agree.

If I were buying electric winches today, I'd be looking at Andersons... class of the league, but not cheap.

These look good from Andersons, I'll have to raise the lines up, the motor sits on top of the mounting platform that should be easy enough.

I have a Milwaukee (brand) M28 drill (Lithium battery)with a two speed right angle drive (cat. No. 48-06-2871) and a Winchbit (winchbit.com) in the chuck that I use on a #48 two speed self-tailing winch to raise the mainsail on my catamaran rather than changing to an electric winch. Works a treat.

I like the idea of an e-winch handle but I've just had a look and it doesn't look like we can't get the M28 in Aus, I don't think they make a 240VDC version.

I've sent a message off to them to see if anything is coming.............. .........

I have the same M28 Milwaukee drill with the winchbit... and just checked, the standard charger is only 120V.

That said, find out the favorite local version of the"hole hawg" right angle drill that has metal guts and is rechargeable and get the winchbit.

It is a great combo and work on any installed winch. Plus, when you ditch the winchbit and they can drill though 2x4 in your house when you need to run wiring or plumbing.

These are amazing winches and (IMHO) are in another league ...... serious reputation, solid stainless (no plastic bits) they require less turns on the winch and are MUCH kinder to your sheets and other cordage. The bad news is they come at a serious premium ....... But I believe they offer value and am fitting them to my new 50ft cat which is in build. Two electric and the rest manual (7 in total)

Andersen is owned by Ronstan ..... so should be easily available in Oz

You can get them on Ebay second hand from time to time. i've got one you can try if you like. Haven't seen you for a while. Where are you berthed?

I use a 120V to 240V transformer which is readily available on ebay.
When they come up on ebay they often have the winch bit included for about US$350. I've seen recently that the M18 which is available in Australia do a Hole Hawg or similar (about AU$800) which is reported to be good.
