Really short dyneema with two eye splices

Briefly: trying to make a very short harness tether for my small boat that's 12" long with an eye splice at either end. Obviously the two eye splices are going to overlap each other. Not sure how to do this or if it's possible. Want to make a tether short enough to keep me on the boat. Will have static tethers at work points to tie into. This is for the fore and aft tethers.

Use "five brummels" (back to back). That will be about 2" long and 80% strength.

You can't do normal eye splices because you don't have enough bury length.

Ok I'll work on that. I was wondering if it were possibly to bury two tails next to each other. Haven't learned the Brummel yet but here goes.

It would be very tight - not impossible, but would be difficult.

I think (depending on what dia line you are using) you have the room to do a bury splice on one end and the 5x brummel on the other if that is any easier for you. But the double 5x brummel would be neater/thinner.

Ok got it. Is this roughly what you mean by 5x brumell? That's my first Brummell attempt of any kind. Click image for larger version

Note: not the diameter I would be using for the tether.

Normally they are stacked right on top of each other, rather than spread out like that. I don't know if spreading them out effects strength our not - I have not tested that - my guess is that it is ok, but I don't know for sure. I do know if they are closely stacked they are 80%.

Ok so stacked on top of each other with about 1 diameter between each loop plus a 2" buried tail? This is 5/16" Amsteel.

Thanks for your time.

Edit: I see you are saying the stacked loops would be 2". How long would you make the tail for 5/16" Amsteel?

Ideal would be to have the two tapered end just overlap (an inch or two overlap) in the middle of the strop. That would remove a lot of the load from the brummel's and make the whole thing almost 100% (80% is with just the 5 brummel's with no bury at all).

Got it. Now that I'm pondering it though I'm trying to splice these around carabiners and snap shackles. Is there and strength lost if I end up luggage tagging the Brummells to the hooks? Because I think tying the Brummells with the hooks in place will either be impossible or very annoying.

Sully don't lose sight of Evans point of tapering ends of your bury.
I sometimes double up my tethers (say 6 ft. to 3 ft.)to stay close when needed.
24" would be enough for your splice/bury if doubling up (to 12") would work for you.

I wouldn't even try. Instead, I would buy a climbing sling for peanuts. Tested strong.

Then cow-hitch your favorite clip on each end. Doesn't weaken it enough to matter. How far are you going to fly?

I can't imagine how 12" is going to work. Can't even sit up. Might as well lash yourself to the mast, Bill Murray style. How about 3-4' with a clip on each end and the chest clip secured at 1' with a knot (knots slip some, but that won't matter)?

Why not make up a loup? It's easier to make, and stronger with the same line.

I was thinking of a loop but it would be a little ungainly and more prone to catching on things I think.

Re: Really short dyneema with two eye splices

It would be reasonably slick if you bought one of the dyneema webbing climbing slings, and then ran a row of stitching down it, sewing the two sides/parts together but leaving the ends as loops. Not much extra to catch that way.

Everyone here told me it would not work as dyneema (Amsteel) is too slippery.

I have three of these Bowline+half hitch knots on my 1/8 inch Amsteel dinghy painter tied to my 95 lb dingy and the knots are just as tight after two years.

Sometimes real world experience beats theory.
Mmmm . . . Actually (1) I would NOT have told you that would slip in that application under "normal loads/conditions". You need to load it to about 30% of breaking strength to get it to slip. I doubt you get anywhere near that. (2) but there are better knots than that for the application (water bowline or figure 8 or estar for three), and a splice there would be slicker and not have taken much more time (and why use dyneema and then immediately cut its strength to less than half with a knot) (3) and for the application the OP is talking about there is (I guess) the (remote) possibility of significant fall loading.
