Re-Rigging: What is best 1X19 wire brand/manufacturer?

My 48' cutter is rigged with Norseman terminals and 1X19 wire, half 7/16" and half 3/8" in diameter. I'm 58 years old, and I want wire that will last as long as possible going forward. Any advice on brands to avoid, or the best type to buy? I would rather spend more for very good wire than purchase "bargain" wire and watch it corrode or fail. Thanks for any advice, tips, links etc.

Type 302 1X19 Stainless Wire Rigging is generally stronger (breaking strength), but less corrosion resistant, than type 316.
Ask your supplier for a copy of the manufacturer’s actual mill spec sheet.

Quality rigging wire is a rare breed anymore. Nothing good is made in the US now - Loos is terrible, and China is pumping out crap.

KOS out of Korea is very good wire. Rigging Only sells it at a decent price. ACMO out of France is also good.

Retailers and distributers seem to go to great lengths to hide the manufacturer of their products and there is so much bad rigging wire out there that it is a buyer's beware market.

Thanks for the tips. Buyer beware, indeed. I want this wire to last into my old age, if possible.

Then try Rigging Only. My understanding is that they test each batch of wire they receive from their suppliers.

I've not bought wire from them, but I have bought line and running rigging hardware. Their prices are competitive and the service is very good.

Is there an wire being made of Nitronic or other more modern alloys?

Isn't nitronic used in rod rigging?

Re: Re-Rigging: What is best 1X19 wire brand/manufacturer?

I have been rigging for a long time and purchase my wire from Alps wire rope corporation in Saint Charles, IL. It's 304, made in Korea and half the price of Wholesale from West Marine-Port supply, Svensons or any other suppliers. The 304 is stronger than 316, the corrosion issue is mute in my opinion, my 44 /ft. Rhodes Cutter has had this wire on her for over 10 years and i see no issues there. <alpswirerope.com> Good Luck.

Yeah, I think so, Nitronic 40 or 50 maybe.

Yes, Alps sells KOS wire from Korea, which is excellent. 304 is ~10% stronger, but will show rust in the tropics.

On the Alps website they show the breaking strength of the 3/8" 1x19 316 at 15,575 lbs as opposed to the 302/304 in the same size at 14,800 lbs.

Looks like the 316 is stronger according to this but I was always under the impression what you said was correct. You sacrifice a little strength for more rust resistance.

Am I missing something?

Re: Re-Rigging: What is best 1X19 wire brand/manufacturer?

Was in the steel trade for 38 years before my retirement. We processed over 100 tons of 300 stainless a month. Tested in our own lab. Any difference between strength of 304 and 316 is insignificant. It is my opinion that the rust on 304 and the possibility of crevice corrosion cracking from that is more of a problem. I have now been in the south Caribbean for over 12 years with 20 year old 316 rigging and no problems.

Yeah, that looks strange. Particularly when looking at the same tables, they list the break strength for 304 7/16 as equal to 316 and the break strength for 304 1/2 as less than 316.

Technically, 304 and 316 start out with the same tensile strength, but 304 gains strength faster than 316 during cold working (drawing the wire). This is why 304 is considered to have a slight strength edge over 316.

I'm with svadagio - any difference in strength is insignificant in this application (nobody chooses their rigging wire to be anywhere close to its breaking strength - even accounting for unanticipated loads), while the corrosion difference between the two is significant in this application.

Avoid the generalization on 304 versus 306 SS. I always request proof test results which relate to the batch of wire I'm buying. The wire drawing process alone and surface finish introduces variations in proof test results.

I have some alps 316 wire I'm testing that I managed to achieve test results for. Plan to to replace the rigging on our Liberty 458 in 2016.

As for 304 showing rust in the tropics but not 316 that is only anecdotal. Rust on 304 or 316 is due to something ferrous based on or in the surface of the wire. A contaminant of some sort.

This can be from airborne sources such as someone grinding near your boat or from airborne particulates. Brake dust near a highway is a great ss contaminant. Once you have a contaminant present then you'll attract more.
