Question on Sail weight?

I need a new Main Sail.

I am off to the South Pacific for a few years at least. My 30 year old sale is maybe looking a little tired.
Is a 7 oz US Dacron Crosscut a good idea?

Money is an object so reasonable considerations please.

Steve

Re: Question on Sail weight?

Just had a set made for my hunter.Used 8.3 oz. dacron for both my main and Genoa.Wanted all weather sails .Last trip south blew out 2 135`s before I got as far as New York, both 5oz dacron, finished the last 11.000 miles with an 80% foresail.Don`t know the size of your boat, but 7oz should be a good all round sail.

Didn`t look to close, now I know the size of your boat, same size as mine.7oz should suit you fine.Tell the sail maker what you are going to do and have him do a little x-tra where it should have it.

Re: Question on Sail weight?

If you are counting on yourdeeply reefed main as a storm sail, I'd want a bit heavier cloth than 7 Oz. If you do go with such light cloth, be sure that the patches are both large and heavy.

Not sure what your source for this sail is, but a serious discussion with a sailmaker would be a good investment of your time.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Question on Sail weight?

Hi jim,

I have a storm jib and a smaller main from another boat that looks like new and feels like 7 lb cloth:-) But I will talk to the loft about your point.

Re: Question on Sail weight?

In my opinion 7oz would be a bit light for serious offshore cruising unless the boat is under 30ft. 8oz would be a better choice. Boats 40ft + 9oz. There is little disadvantage going heavier and little difference in cloth price. There is a lot of detail and thinking behind a well designed offshore cruising sail, its not just about the cloth weight.
