Price differences in stainless wire rope

Hello again forum,

I'm looking at replacing my 1x19 316 stainless rigging and have noticed a huge price differences in stainless wire rope. For example, the size I'm looking at is 7/32" and there are websites aplenty with prices in the sub $1.50 range, Defender has it for $1.69, yet West Marine has it for an unbelievable $3.20. Any ideas on these differences?

When it comes to price comparison for anything, West is off the charts. I wouldn't include them in any pricing ...

S/S wire Rope (1x19) is available in Type 302, 304 and Type 316 stainless steel. They each have differing cost/benefits.

Keddy,
Be aware that when you shop marine chandleries you are paying for their considerable advertising/sales costs. I have purchased many items for my boat from non-marine sources and paid 25-40% less. The last item, for example, was 316 stainless steel tubing purchased from an industrial manufacturing site. The cost to cut the tubing to the exact length and polish was much less than that offered in marine sources. Here's a site for $1.10 a foot for 7/32". If you look further, you might find and even better deal. Good luck and good sailing. Wire Rope and Wire Cable from Quality Chain & Cable › ... › Stainless Steel Wire Rope

A second vote for Rigging Only.

I've not used them for standing rigging (yet). But they helped me plan a change in my running rigging. Their prices are very competitive.

From what I understand, they also test each batch of S/S wire when they receive it. If it doesn't meet specs it gets sent back.

Re: Price differences in stainless wire rope

I believe all SS 1x19 comes frim Asian. It is my understanding that Koss is considered to be one, if not the Premier product.

Try Phoenix Wire Rope in Jacksonville. They are an importer and distribute to the trade.

Prices are very good
Around good supplier is Consolidated rigging in Jacksonville. Buy the wire from them. Do Not have them put any attachment on. They do not have a roll swage. Contact Jimmy.

Seco South in St Petes are good Contact is June

Re: Price differences in stainless wire rope

Look for the guys that sell to industry. In Grand Rapids, I call FD Lake. They make slings cranes and other lifting equipment and sell all of the usual makers. Their main business is NOT marine. Otherwise, I work with my rigger at the boat yard. I wouldn't think of calling We$t Marine.

Re: Price differences in stainless wire rope

I've re rigged a few boats and found that 316 ss is not always the same quality. I've found the best price and quality at riggingandhardware.com and Jamestowndistributores.com on the first one they have a number to call and the guy there is very knowledgeable and friendly. if he doesn't have what you want in stock he'll direct you to an other distributor that will have it. Chinese stainless will start bleeding from the core within a year....ie...west marine and Defender to name a couple

good luck
