Thanks Jane and all the others... I am going to look into some of these links and ideas.... I was thinking one could transfer the sail area from the main to a Genoas but I understand the concern about the best breeze being higher up...still would be nice to have the option to run the ICW if need be .... perhpas also buy a Kite

Thanks again all for the great advice...

Cheers

Definitely can be done. Brief explanation:

The reason for boat balls, an update - BoatBanter.com

But you would have to make sure it's legal, in each location.

I agree 1000%. Cutting down the mast will devalue your boat significantly.. Just don't do it, find another way.

Re: Possible to cut 6ft off a mast ??

Just a weird thought ... Would it be feasible to put the tall mast on deck and borrow, rent, or buy a smaller complete rig for the passage, leave it ashore in the destination area and sail with the tall stick, then come back up with the smaller rig up and the tall stick on deck?

Oh good Lord. All that trouble just so you can drive down the ICW? I say, if you want to drive down the ICW, USE A CAR.

Re: Possible to cut 6ft off a mast ??

to the OP: It can be done. I met a guy a couple years ago who just bought a brand new Passport 485. He had the mast shortened to be under 65. It was a big project since it also involves cutting all the standing rigging and sails. I keep my boat at the yard where they did the rigging work.

Why not tabernacle your mast? That is if it's deck stepped. If not, mod the deck and structure to do it. I lived in area where I had to do it to a couple of my boats.

You need a gaff rig.

Re: Possible to cut 6ft off a mast ??

The big balls thing has been done to death here especially when the OP is talking about a cat. And, I've never seen a tabernacle for a mast that big. Please post it if it exists. But there is an open bridgedeck design 64' gaff rigged schooner cat that would clear the bridges.
