Old Lewmar winch servicing
Hi: I have a really old Lewmar 48 ST with the 6 allen screws holding down the line stripper. Anyone know or remember how to remove the drum once the line stripper is removed. Not obvious to me. Thanks in advance for any advice!

You can probably find an exploded parts diagram of your winch here: Oyster Bay Boat Shop

Thanks
Tim: Thanks for the link to the oyster bay site. Lot's of data on Lewmar although not my particular winch but will likely give me a hint. Best Rick on Kapai.

The drum is held by a snap ring on the top or screws. The good news is when you lift the drum off you won't have parts flying every direction. The pawl springs are inside the larger gears. If you open them up you can loose them. Don't worry, if the winch is this old go to West Marine and by all new springs. They stock them as well as Barriant springs. $1 per spring sort of a rip off but the trip to the store costs more than that. You may not require new pawls but you can buy them at West marine as well. Cleaning and grease will usually make them seem like new. The gears are all machined bronze and should still be good.
Takes about 45 minutes to clean in kero and grease everything well.

Old Lewmar 48 ST
Thanks everyone. Still having problems with this baby. The winch has 6 allen screws on top which I removed. Next is the line stripper which comes off. There is no ring to remove or any other set screws that I can see but the drum does not just slide up. I may post a picture just in case someone has done this before because it is not obvious an severel blows with a hammer have not caused the drum to come up over the center cylinder. Apart from that it is an elegant piece of machinery. All the Best Rick
