New Standing Rigging...

Aloha,

I reside on Oahu and we have very limited resources for standing rigging here on the island. Two do exist but I wanted to ask others about their knowledge of any suppliers that help boaters do their own standing rigging replacement and at a lower price point for the materials.

I received one quote of $9500 for the materials and $1500 for the labor.

I have 3/8 and 7/16 1x19 shrouds with swage fittings.

Anything on the West Coast? Anywhere else?

Thanks!
Matt

Re: New Standing Rigging...

You can do the rigging yourself with StaLok or other mechanical terminals. Follow the instructions and you can churn out stays and shrouds with about a 1/2 hours labor for each wire after very little practice. You still have to buy the materials and they won't be cheap for a boat your size.

West Marine has a sale on wire going on right now though I don't know if that covers wire your size. If they have it should be able to pick it up at the Oahu West's with no freight even if they have to ship it in. There should be other suppliers on the concrete island though undoubtedly not cheap. Ebay has had some good prices on mechanical terminals from Lewmar and Osculatti. Google should turn up other sources at less than astronomical prices.

Try Buzz Ballenger near Santa Cruz. ballenger spars home page

Just returned to Seattle after picking up the mast, boom and standing rigging for a 40’ cutter I’m building. Buzz used swagged fittings on the upper ends of the stays, included a little extra wire at the lower ends and supplied hayn fittings for me to install.
Buzz is honest, straightforward, knowledgeable and a fine craftsman!

Cheers
