Needing a little help/advice

Hi all! I a an admitted Newbie and just purchased a 2002 West Wight Potter 19 and it came with no instruction and very little literature. My question is does anyone have any pictures of what the rigging (without sails) should look like? I am having a heck of a time figuring it out. It does have a furler which I assume acts as the forestay but beyond that I am lost. Any help (pics especially) would be appreciated.

The rigging on that boat is pretty straightforward. As far as the standing rigging goes (wires going up the mast), Google "West Wight Potter 19" and look at the pictures it throws up. You basically have the forestay, the shrouds, and the backstay. The lower shrouds attach to the aft-most chainplate of the pair on each side.

Running rigging (the ropes and lines) may be a bit more difficult to figure out, and pictures generally are not going to help. Your best bet is to determine what each line does and then consider the logical route and terminus for each.

Best of all, find someone who lives near you who owns the same boat who is willing to visit for an hour and explain it all to you.

Damn... I thought the two shots in the gallery showed enough to set up the mast... one head on and one side on..
How much more detail do you need... try Sailboatdata.com... they have line drawings with rig/hull etc....

Yikes! The forestay is inside the foil to which the furler attaches.

Go and have a look (possibly with some binoculars) at some other boats and look at how they are rigged. They won't tell you exactly how yours should be rigged, but will get you into the ballpark to understand what you have.

If the mast has never been up (under your ownership) then a possibility that not all the bits were passed onto you! I mention that because any confusion may not be simply you!

When raising the mast make sure you do not kink any of the shrouds (the side wires), the forestay (the front wire) or the backstay (the rear wire).



From Boatman's link, looks like she is a fractional rig (forestay does not go to the top of the mast) - that info likely not of any great use! (excepting to know why the forestay (front wire) does not reach the top of the mast!)...........but very useful to learn the correct terms to save confusion when discussing problems with others - albeit note as I am from the UK, I may be using UK only terms! - some boat terms for stuff varies across the Atlantic!, no idea if this is the case here).

Although unrelated, it still makes me smile - a mate new to boats came to me for advice!, part of that was me e-mailing him a list of stuff to have onboard and that included Warps (mooring lines).....the problem was I did a typo and called them Wraps (with a helpful definition next to it), was only much later I discovered that he was calling them Wraps!............and he still does many years later - and he hates me for it!!
