Can't quite tell from the picture, but if it's the place where the anchor chain goes through to the outside of the boat then oldragbaggers is right, it's a hawse pipe. "A ship's hawsepipe is the pipe passing through the bow section of a ship that the anchor chain passes through."

But from the photo it looks a bit like the intake on the windlass....

Ah...you're kidding right? Try Chain Pipe (e.g. see Whitecap Rope Or Chain Deck Pipe Special). FWIW, Google is your friend...

Basically a fitting thru which an anchor rode and chain can be stowed belowdeck. A hawsepipe is a tube between the deck and the forward hull plating, thru which the anchor chain, ( or a hawser, hence hawsepipe ) can be deployed.

I'm an old gurmudgeon sailing dinosaur but the first things I learned were the names of things that were new to me on a a boat. There are a few books on the subject and if you want to go cheap then the public library can be your friend.

Don't let this post deter you from asking questions here on the forum. I'd rather you know what those thingies are than to give you a ration of stuff.

HyLyte got it. Rope / Chain Deck Pipe
The elongated slot is to hold the chain.
Sea Dog and Perko use a horizontal slot.


If the hole was round, it would be a Rope Deck Pipe.

To get specific you need to ask google what bow chocks, chain pipes and hawse pipe are. Then you can narrow the doohickey part down. There are bow rollers too that chain can go over and through but what you had pictured was a chainpipe deck fitting that can be used for nylon anchor rode as well as chain.

Looks like the picture was taken in Australia, I'm not sure what they call them down there, chain pipe here though.
