Mast step on a Rawson 30

The mast step on my deck is old and cracked. I want to make a new one. What will this look like when the mast is removed? Is it a recessed, flat oval? Something that could be made with a router?

Not sure about the vessel-specific construction, but unless you really want to remake that one you can just dry it, sand it, fill the cracks with wood filler epoxy and then encapsulate it with multiple layers of resin type epoxy. Could be done with the mast in place as well.

I've done this to restore some difficult to reproduce mahogany pieces on my boat. You'll just want to keep it varnished in order to reduce yellowing of the epoxy coat over time.

The actual step is the aluminum piece beneath the mast. The wood is just a spacer.

I agree. The step looks fine, just refinish the wood spacer. That halyard (?) needs to be replaced yesterday.

Any chance you could post a pic?

My wooden bowsprit looks about as old and worn as the wooden spacer. Can I just refinish that too, or should I worry about loss of strength?

Re: Mast step on a Rawson 30

Hi there, we have a Rawson 30 with the same wood spacer and we refinished by sanding and filling the wood. Then I used two coats of Britesides one part paint. It lasts about three years before a retouch only is required. Cheers Dan & Marilyn Timms "Sharutika" Vananda British Columbia.
