pirate Location of reefing winch ?

Just purchased a 33' Cutter.

The Main has three reefs; slab reefing
There is a small 'reefing' winch ready to mount, but the current owner says he was never certain where to put it.

There are gallows for the boom, thus seems reasonable to reef and pull that Luff down by hand.

Questions?
1. What benefit from using a winch ?
(A. - both , pulls the Luff down and the clew OUT ... any others advantages?)

2. Wanting the advantage(s) of the winch , then where best to put it?
(A. Any handy place on the side of the forward end of the boom?
Port side maybe - to get 'right-of-way'?

Do people ever put them on the mast?

Questions, comments suggestions welcomed

Re: Location of reefing winch ?

By slab, do you mean there is one line for each reef, that attaches to the tack AND the clew?

Re: Location of reefing winch ?

Reefing winches are normally mounted on the back of the mast just below the boom or if all the reefing lines are run aft then they generally are on the coach roof. If you want to get a proper reef you will need a winch

Re: Location of reefing winch ?

There are ways to rig single point reefing (tack & clew) and run it to the coachroof.

My tack end is manual - I have to physically hook it in but the clew end for reef one and two runs to the coachroof. I use the common winch there.

I don't tie the sail in and have been in 40+knot blows. On a big sail you'd want to.

Whether you do is a matter of whether you want to leave the relative safety of the cockpit.

I'd prefer single point reefing, stay in the cockpit and trade flailing the sailfoot as opposed to going forward in a storm. Sails can be replaced.

I also saw a great rig with the storm jib rigged in a bag at the mast - pull a line to release the bag top and hoist, sheets prerigged - never leave the cockpit.
