Anyone used any sort of "dip" type end whipping? Maybe like this stuff...

Seems like it would be quite easy, if it works. But does it?

Same thing as Plasti Dip Just in a different container. And it does work, you just have to wait for it to cure.

Resist the dark side! A needle and some waxed thread does a better job. Takes all of five minutes to do it right, with no plastic involved.

That's how I've been doing it, and maybe I'm just not very good, but it takes me a heck of a lot longer than 5 minutes!

You can also use a scrap of thread to pull the end back.! Agree, it only takes a few minutes once you get the hang of it.

Do it correctly! Goo on the tails of your lines tells everyone you do not know how to splice!

Needle and thread NOT needed. Just some very small line...

Form a loop. wrap toward loop. pass end through loop. pull loop free end and the other end until the loop gets pulled under the wrapping. Keep pulling until tight as you like snip off excess.

Be sure to clean surface very well with alcohol

The needle and thread should be used when splicing to keep it from slipping. Good luck with that with a dip. As far as the ends, why carry another thing along?

Really, it isn't difficult. I was at a rigging seminar at the last strictly sail with a great guy, Brian Toss. I was pretty flabbergasted when out of a room full of sailors only myself and 3 others raised our hands when he asked "who knew how to splice?"

It's worth learning and practice makes perfect!

A coupla weeks ago we were out on a friends boat and a line began to fray (that goo gave up the ghost ; -)

I just sat there and ended it back on its self (it was a 3 strand so I didn't need whipping twine to do it) and then did two more that were on the verge of going just for good measure. Ropes that begin to fray always seem to do it at the worst times. By the time you get to them they have often flogged themselves to death for a foot or two.

Save your ropes and lines! Splice and whip!

Okay, so you've convinced me. So now I need to learn The Right Way® to whip the end of a line. I'll do a google search, but does anyone have any favorite sites that they could recommend?

(I became a fan of Brian Toss way back when he was on that PBS series about sailing with... was it Steve Thomas? Anyway, he taught me how to tie a bowline quickly and easily, and in a variety of different ways, when before all I knew was "the rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree...")

Go to the library or book store and get a book on Marlinespike Seamanship.
Whipping is easy, fast and fun. There are many, many different ways to whip an end.

For braided line, I use the Common Whipping, no needle required. Keep it all pulled tight and it will not work loose.
For 3 stranded, use the sailmakers whipping at the end of the line. If you need to whip the line some distance from the end, Palm and Needle Whipping.

It works....but let me escape quickly before the purists burn me at the stake

I use my "Bic" lighter too for sealing up loose ends.

Dang it, I shouldn't have said that!!
I agree; the whipped ends look very salty.
