Lashings instead of turnbuckles. Splices and knots instead of gate fittings. Looks fantastic and seamanlike too.

If your stanchions are drilled through with sharp edges, use a Dremel to round the sharp edges or, much better, use a larger drill to enlarge the holes to a diameter that will accept pieces of a small diameter 316 pipe. Insert the pipe pieces and keep in place with any method (epoxy glue or tap with mallet and tool to enlarge edge diameter etc.)

My lower lifeline holes in the stanchions were sharpish too but the line is fine after 9 years... a little chafing is visible but nothing warranting replacement yet. The upper lifeline is a different story as it gets handled a lot and would chafe badly. Luckily my stanchions have thimble-like holes there with zero chafing issues.

ciao!
Nick.
All depends on use. I like pelican hooks for when on hook, docked, coastal cruising but if offshore I would lash the pelican hook with spectra or similar as failsafe.

Rest sounds good!

I stuck with the wire for the gates but Dyneema with the old turnbuckles for the rest, much like the last pictures in the download above. This way it can be disassembled w/o destroying any materials. Once the terminators are spliced in they are permanent and cannot be pulled back thru the stanchions.

I made my splices extra long in case I had to ever re-do them again in the future. The splices are easy to take out and do over, but I hope I wouldn't have to since I used the line adjusters and the pelican hooks.

Re: Lifelines

If I go off shore, I will back up my lifelines with synthetic rope. There is so much wrong with the rope system used PDF file picture set that I can't even begin to address it.
