Lewmar Electric Winch Issues

Hello Fellow Sailors:

I have a 2009 Beneteau 49. Lewmar replaced all my electric winches in January due to oil leakage and metal shavings. I noticed that my starboard #65 Primary is making a grinding noise again. Has anyone had any problems with Lewmar Electric Winches?

It's becasue Beneteau undersizes the winches. We recently looked at the new 58 and I had to laugh, they have 70's on the thing. When I asked the rep standing next to me all he could say was "they're electric". It simply points out that the boats are built to a price point.

When they replace them again pay for an upgrade to a larger size.

I have electric winches on my 423 and have not had a problem. I suspect that the winch or electric motor/gears are faulty. If the winch motor is overloaded the breaker will trip. It does not make sense that it is overloaded and starts to grind itself up.

Maybe he was the one on the thread about sailing naked that got his privates caught in the winch and that caused the gears to self-destruct. Otherwise, my Lewmar 44 has been operating at overload conditions for 10 years and is still working fine - and quietly.

Lewmar recommends using a “light machine oil”, such as 3 in 1.
