Lazy jacks which design ?

Hi...which is the best system to use on my 30ft monohull?
I'm generally singlehanded. Would like build one myself!

Easy to pick a design. One suggestion is to use amsteel. Not for strength, but it will not chafe the sails like a covered line may do.

I have used retractable jacks on two boats (32 & 30 ft, 20 years). They lay along the boom and mast except when lowering the main. A couple of small cheek blocks up near the spreaders, back to the catch hammock, down to small cleats on the mast at boom height. Short length of bungee cord to allow some stretch on the cleat end. Put them away as soon as the sail ties in place. Works great, can't imagine a better set up.

Ditto! I did the same but added an extra leg to 4 legs. Also, I used rings vs blocks. No need for anti chaffing gear.

Yes, great ideas as want to avoid tangle when raising sail !!

Retractable all the way.

1. Easy to raise (since the jacks aren't there)
2. Easy to drop - deploy and drop. You'll quickly find out where (if any) you tend to catch. On my boat the sail should be rubbing the port jacks because a batten pocket may catch on the stbd side. It's the top batten, so even if it does it's just a matter of a bit of raise and redrop.
3. You don't need to modify your mainsail cover if you use retractables.
4. They can't chafe the sail, they're only there for the 5 min of dropping and tying the main up.

One of the best things I've ever done for my boat. I used tiny thimbles instead of rings and spliced around them.

I use the bungee design, works great, easy to deploy and stow. I don't use blocks, just pad eyes.

Blue's 3 part lazy jacks are attached to the custom designed and made "stackpack" with SS sisterhooks. on both sides. Quickly unclip them, drop the stackpack on top of the sail. and run out the 17 ft awning. Boom sits in a removable crutch at cockpit fwd b/head.

Use a system almost identical to Delmarreys. Used rings instead of blocks. Mast is single spreader with cheek blocks on mast about halfway between spreader and mast head. Bring them forward and hook under their cleat at the mast when not in use. Takes about 2 seconds to do that and don't have to worry about chafe or hooking a batten when raising the sail.

Lazy jacks for for lowering the sail not raising, big pain in the butt trying to raise sail with the battens getting caught up etc.
Go with retractable, as they perform no function under sail or when raising, deploy them when you want to lower the sail.

unless you have a stack-pack type of stowage.
