Junk, or Not to Junk

just curious, I've read alot of positives about a junk rig, but I have not heard any negatives. I would think that if they were that great then they would be more popular. Any opinions?

They're pretty damn good.... its just westerners have not mastered hull construction for them.... prefer life at 15deg......

A local friend built an Airex cored, 65ft Marco Polo which was rigged as a 3 masted junk rigged schooner, with double headsails.
CHRISTIAN VENTURER was a fast boat which her owner Robert Doe did some quite interesting voyages in.
I think you can find some images on various Atlantic Tall Ships races, where she was quite successful.

I have been researching junk rigs a bit, my curiosity is a product of joshua slocums Liberdade. Why he chose that rig for that boat? but I would like to know of the drawbacks. I know that the masts are not stayed and was wondering if todays hulls are not built strong enough to stand a keeled mast.

I think the Freedom rigs disprove that... the fact is its to different for most folk so its not trusted by the masses... bit like Cat's 40yrs ago..

I have been looking into junk rigs for a few months. I am thinking about making a small one for my canoe. Yeah, roll your eyes. Anyway I looked over this The Junk Rig Association - Arne Kverneland's Page

I like the design and think it would be simple and efficient. I love the look.

The down sides of a traditional junk rig (flat panels as opposed to the newer cambered ones) is that they have less than sterling performance to windward, more weight aloft, and lesser ability to as light air sails.
Most if not all of these can be fixed with modern construction techniques and materials.

I think is was Bruce Roberts that said something like, " a boat with a Chinese lug sail will go to windward as well as the HULL is capable of."

All in all they sound like a really interesting way to go.

There is a really go section on the chinese lug rig (junk) in the Sailmaker's Apprentice. (there is a link to it on amazon on the suggested reading page on my blog)

There's a heavy duty manual called Practical Junk Rig, written by Blondie Hasler and Jock McLeod, pioneers of the modern junk rig. There's a brief reference to Liberdade in it.

Is there a hull form for junk rig that is regarded as ideal? I imagine a straight stem is an advantage so she can grip the water to windward.
