Is a shackle OK to attach jib tack to forestay?

I'm new to sailing but trying my best. I made a pendant out of halyard line to bring my jib tack up a couple feet so it clears the pulpit and gives me some view underneath it.

A problem I have is that there's quite a big gap between the tack and the forestay because the first hank is a good couple feet up from the tack.

Is it OK for me to simply put a long enough shackle from the tack to the forestay to work like a hank, so that the entire luff is right against the forestay instead of the bottom having a gap? Or is there a better solution.

Why not just put a hank on the tack cringle?

be sure to tie the tack of the sail to the forstay or furler to prevent loading on the lower hank or boltrope

Re: Is a shackle OK to attach jib tack to forestay?

Great thanks. I can't really use a hank (I don't think) because the metal ring in the tack is just so much bigger than the regular hank grommets.

Sew additional hank.
Never put a shackle in a position introducing chafe to the fotestay - in short time it will chafe through the cable.

I don't see why a shackle will be any worse than a stainless snap-hank. Here's one from Wichard:

Re: Is a shackle OK to attach jib tack to forestay?

Assume the forestay is made of steel. And the hank is made of a softer metal, like brass. The softer metal will wear, so the forestay is left intact. Your plan is good...but you need a shackle made of a soft metal (like the hanks) to avoid chaffing the forestay.

Another option, tie the tack to the forestay with a nice piece of small line.

Both are worse...
There is good reason why hanks are usually made of (strong) cloth.
S/S snaps or shackles do not live in peace when attached to naked strand wire.
But you can always try and see what happens.

Re: Is a shackle OK to attach jib tack to forestay?

I've used a shackle like this many times. Never seen any unusual wear. A bigger worry is unfairly loading the swage If it's bending the wire at very close to the swage, and fatigue.

If the shackle is free and does not really hold the stay tightly - why is it needed anyway?
If it is tight - I can't see how chafe is avoided.
I wholeheartedly agree to the second comment about the swage.

1 hit on google compared with hundreds of bronze/stainless.

Certainly not common.
