I think you've got it. Take the main down and check out all of the furling gear. When rehoisting the main, make sure that the luff tape is securely in the furling track groove. Also when furling the main, make sure that it furls evenly at the luff. Boomvang tension is the key to this. It sounds as if the head of the sail folded somehow and jammed the furler.

thank you. i can do this at the dock right?. when opening the sails at the dock is there anything i should do or not do.


gegroves how do you like sailing in turkey? I will be in datca from september 15th to 29th. not for sailing though

The obvious is to do this during relatively calm conditions. Besides the obvious the sail will furl according to the way you want it to as opposed to twisting from the wind. You will have less stress on the furling system.

Contact your local sailmaker and ask her/him if they make boat calls. In fact, ask if they can spend an afternoon with you at your boat, measuring things and helping you figure out what sails you have, need, and how to use 'em. This will likely cost you some money (and will certainly cost you money in the future as you try to do everything they suggest) but you will learn a lot about how to get the most out of your boat. You'll enjoy sailing more if you understand more, too.
