Idiots Guide to Mast-Stepping and Rigging

Maybe a stupid question but is there an easy how to start guide for those of us who bought a sailboat without any prior sailing knowledge?
We have purchased a sailboat and are going to live on her and we both have prior boat experience but not sailing and I am not intimidated but this but am looking for something a little easier to decipher.
I currently have a 27 foot sailboat in my driveway along with sails, lines, rigging etc and want to learn alot more before I actually put her in the water

Go to Selden and download the rigging / mast stepping e-book.

You will like the book "Sail & rig Tuning" by Ivar Dedekam. Illustrated and very clear.

Re: Idiots Guide to Mast Stepping and Rigging ?

I just read a book on sailing, then went sailing (a 29-foot sloop) and lived to tell about it without incident. If you're anxious, take someone along who knows how to sail and/or take a sailing class. Have someone knowledgeable help you or at least check the installation of the rigging.

Re: Idiots Guide to Mast Stepping and Rigging ?

There is a video demo at this site. I use a similar rig and have no trouble raising and lowering the mast solo.

Sail Trailers - Mast Raising

Keep at it, you'll get there.

Re: Idiots Guide to Mast Stepping and Rigging ?

Go to YouTubecom and type in

"Raising the mast" or "Stepping the mast"

you'll see many different variations on how to raise your mast. If there are 2 of you, it's pretty easy, but these videos will show how others do it alone.

I am not anxious I just want to be sure everything is put together correctly to begin with. I have the general concept and if it was all put together great but I want more guidance in going from a bag of sail and lines to an assembled boat

Re: Idiots Guide to Mast Stepping and Rigging ?

Tori: You don't say what kind of 27-foot sailboat. I will be stepping the mast on Connemara Sunday or Monday and will use a crane and several other pairs of hands.

Connemara is a 27-foot Mirage with a deck-stepped mast, one set of spreaders, and a split backstay. And while the mast is not as one should say heavy -- not compared with, say, the mast from a Nonsuch 26 -- it's still a pretty heavy load.

OTOH, some 27-footers have masts with a tabernacle and are meant to be stepped and rigged by one or two people.

Good luck.
